What Maintenance Includes

Screen and Coat

A one-day service, performed about three years after refinishing. We lightly sand the surface to remove small scratches, then apply a fresh coat of polyurethane. Waiting too long makes this option unavailable, since deep scratches require full refinishing.

Repairs

Our craftsmen address scratches, dents, and water damage with techniques that restore the appearance and performance of hardwood.

Preventive Care Guidance

We advise on steps such as using furniture pads, placing rugs in high-traffic areas, trimming pet nails, and controlling humidity levels in the home.

Common Questions About Maintenance

Can I mop hardwood floors?

Yes, but excess water can damage hardwood by causing warping, swelling, and discoloration. Follow these guidelines:

  • Use a lightly damp mop and follow immediately with a dry pass
  • A microfiber mop works best for controlling moisture
  • Wring it out thoroughly; the mop should feel almost dry to the touch and should not leave puddles
  • Mop with the grain of the wood and work in small sections
  • Use a pH-neutral cleaner made for hardwood floors, or plain water if your finish requires it
  • Always sweep or dry-mop first to remove loose dirt
  • Steam mops should not be used on hardwood

How can scratches in hardwood floors be fixed?

Light scratches can often be addressed with a screen and coat. Deeper marks or dents may need professional repair.

What helps prevent hardwood floors from being scratched?

Several steps reduce surface wear and protect hardwood floors:

  • Attach felt pads to all furniture legs and use area rugs in high-traffic spaces
  • Place mats at all entryways, inside and out, to catch dirt and grit before it reaches the floor
  • Maintain a no-shoes policy; high heels can be particularly damaging
  • Avoid furniture with plastic wheels; use soft rubber casters or furniture sliders instead
  • Always lift heavy items rather than dragging them
  • Keep pet nails trimmed short and smooth, and consider protective gear like booties or nail caps if needed
  • Sweep daily with a soft brush or microfiber cloth to remove dirt and sand that cause scratches
  • Use pH-neutral cleaners with soft mops

What if paint or stains get on hardwood floors?

Attempting home remedies may worsen the problem. Our team uses methods that respect both the finish and the wood species.
